Vala was raised alongside her twin brother, 100 miles east of Novgorod in the Kyivan Rus'. As the daughter of the settlement's Jarl, she was trained in combat, sharing this training with her brother, who was being prepared to take over as Jarl when their father grew old. However, her brother became convinced that he needed to prove his worthiness as a leader and left in search of glory. Their mother continuously urged Vala to bring him back. Eventually, Vala vowed to do so.
To fulfill her promise, she joined a group of raiders, gaining valuable experience on the battlefield and honing her skills as a scout. This solidified her enjoyment of combat and her desire to prove her prowess. She heard tales of the Varangian Guard and, driven by ambition, decided she wanted to become skilled enough to join this elite force. Inspired by Jarl Aesa's success and sharp mind, Vala believed that joining her clan would be an good step toward earning a fortune and refining her abilities.
Yet, Vala remains conflicted by her vow to find her brother and her desire to pursue her own path. Above all, she dreads the possibility of encountering him on opposite sides of the battlefield.
